Multi-Modal Rule: ALWAYS provide at least 2 modalities. If primary is touch, add voice or physical buttons. If primary is voice, add physical controls. Single-modality devices fail accessibility requirements and frustrate users when primary mode is unavailable (phone battery dead, hands busy, noisy environment).

Common Mistake: Color-Only Status Indicators

The Mistake: A smart home hub uses color-only indicators: - Green LED = “System OK” - Red LED = “Error” - Blue LED = “Updating”

Why This Fails: 8% of males and 0.5% of females have color vision deficiency (color blindness). Red-green color blindness is most common. Result: Users cannot distinguish between “OK” (green) and “Error” (red).
