What a Decision Brief Is

A decision brief is a self-paced exercise built around a real engineering trade-off with worked numbers, not a single correct answer. You pick a position, defend it with evidence, then fill in six short fields:

RecommendationThe option you're choosing, stated plainly.
EvidenceThe payload size, cost, or power number that supports it.
Rejected alternativeWhat you didn't pick, and why.
Boundary noteThe condition this recommendation assumes.
Risk or limitWhat could still go wrong.
Recheck triggerThe event that would reopen the decision.

Where the Trade-Offs Live

Four recurring trade-offs anchor the format, each grounded in the module that teaches the underlying protocol or architecture — and six bundled cross-cutting scenarios live in IoT Design Trade-off Scenarios:

Solo or Study Group

With a group, time-box each position to a few minutes, assign someone to argue the unpopular side, and judge reasoning quality, not the conclusion. Working alone, do the same thing in one sitting: write your first recommendation, then genuinely argue the opposite side before you finalize the brief. Switching sides once is what exposes the assumption you didn't know you were making.
