Terms of Use

1. The service

IoTClass.org provides free educational content about the Internet of Things (IoT), interactive tools, and optional accounts with progress tracking, badges, mastery rewards, and Classrooms. It is operated by IOTCLASS CIC, a community interest company registered in England and Wales (company number 17293282) — see also our Privacy Policy.

The site is provided “as is.” We work to keep it accurate, but content is for learning, not professional advice — verify safety-critical electronics or engineering practice independently before relying on it.

2. Content licence

The curriculum (text, figures, and interactive content) is licensed under Creative Commons BY-NC-SA 4.0: you may copy, adapt, and share it for non-commercial purposes with attribution to IoTClass.org, and any derivative you share must carry the same licence. Teachers may freely use and adapt the curriculum for their own classes under this licence.

Code snippets shown in chapters are licensed MIT, so you can use them in your own projects — including commercial ones — without restriction.

Everything else about the platform (its software, design, and branding) remains our property and is not covered by the licences above.

3. Accounts

Signing in uses Google OAuth; we never see or store a password. You are responsible for activity on your account and for keeping your sign-in secure, and you agree to provide accurate information. You must be at least 13 years old to create an account; see Privacy Policy §9. We may suspend or remove an account for abuse of these Terms.

4. Acceptable use

You may not:

• use automated systems, bots, or scrapers to extract content from this website at scale;
• attempt to access another user’s account or data, or to breach access controls;
• use abusive, offensive, or impersonating display names or content;
• use the platform to distribute malware or spam;
• present platform content as your own work, beyond what the licence in §2 allows;
• use the platform for commercial purposes beyond what the licence in §2 allows.

We may remove content or restrict access for anyone who breaks these rules. The platform is used by learners of all ages, including under-18 students, and content and conduct should stay appropriate for that audience.

5. Your content

Things you create on the platform — classroom names and descriptions, saved Design Studio work, and display names — remain yours. You grant us the licence we need to operate the service: to store your content and show it to whoever you have chosen to share it with (for example, your classroom). Keep what you post appropriate for an educational audience that includes young learners; we may remove content and revoke access for violations.

6. Classrooms and teaching

Creating a Classroom requires an admin-approved teacher role — it is not an open capability available to every signed-in user. To apply, you provide your institutional (e.g. university) email address, institution name, role/title, and intended use; this is linked to the Google identity you sign in with, and an administrator reviews and approves or rejects each application before you can create a classroom.

If you are approved to teach:

• creating a Classroom for others — especially for under-18 students — means you confirm you are entitled to do so under your institution’s rules and applicable law, and that you will obtain any consents your context requires;
• when a student joins your classroom, they are shown, before joining, the statement “Your teacher will be able to see your progress and quiz results for this classroom’s curriculum” — this consent is required at join time, and ends the moment a student leaves the classroom;
• you may use classroom roster and progress data only for teaching purposes;
• Classrooms have fair-use caps: up to 100 students per classroom, and up to 5 active classrooms per teacher.

7. Interactive content and simulations

The interactive simulators, labs, and tools on this website — including third-party ones such as Wokwi — are for educational demonstration only. They may not reflect every real-world condition or edge case and should not be the sole basis for a real IoT implementation. They are provided “as is” without warranties of accuracy or completeness.

8. Third-party content and services

This website embeds or relies on:

• YouTube for some videos, loaded in privacy-enhanced mode and only after you choose to play them (YouTube’s Terms of Service);
• Wokwi for ESP32 hardware simulation labs (Wokwi’s Terms);
• amCharts for some interactive charts and maps;
• Google for sign-in;
• Supabase for our backend database and authentication;
• GitHub Pages for hosting the site;
• Cloudflare for cookie-free web analytics.

Each is subject to its own terms and privacy policy. See our Cookie Notice for what each may set in your browser.

9. Availability and changes to the service

This is a free service with no uptime guarantee, and features may change or be withdrawn as the platform develops. We will announce material changes that affect existing accounts by email and by a notice on the site.

10. Disclaimer of warranties

This website and its content are provided “AS IS” and “AS AVAILABLE,” without warranties of any kind, either express or implied, including but not limited to accuracy or completeness of information, fitness for a particular purpose, non-infringement of intellectual property rights, and uninterrupted or error-free operation.

11. Limitation of liability

To the fullest extent the law allows, IoTClass.org is not liable for indirect, incidental, or consequential damages arising from your use of, or inability to use, this free educational service, or from reliance on information it provides. Nothing in these Terms excludes liability that cannot lawfully be excluded (for example, for death or personal injury caused by negligence, or for fraud).

12. Governing law

These Terms of Use are governed by the law of England and Wales.

13. Modifications to these Terms

We may update these Terms of Use; changes take effect once posted to this page. The banner at the top of the page always shows when it was last substantively edited, so there is no separate stale date to maintain here. Your continued use of the website after a change is posted means you accept the updated Terms.
