Wi-Fi Channel Quick Reference

2.4 GHz spacing

  • Channel centers are usually 5 MHz apart.
  • A 20 MHz channel footprint is much wider than that spacing.
  • Nearby channel numbers can still overlap heavily.

1, 6, and 11

  • In US-style 1-11 deployments, channels 1, 6, and 11 are the conservative non-overlapping set.
  • They are separated by 25 MHz center-to-center.
  • Use local rules and actual scans before finalizing a plan.

Co-channel reuse

  • APs on the same channel contend for airtime rather than partially overlapping.
  • Reuse works only when APs are far enough apart or power is controlled.
  • More APs do not automatically mean more capacity.

Power matters

  • High transmit power can enlarge the contention area.
  • Client devices may not transmit as strongly as access points.
  • Balance power with coverage, roaming, and airtime goals.

Not a spectrum analyzer

The curves are a teaching model of channel footprints. Real RF energy uses spectral masks and depends on hardware, modulation, and environment.

Adjacent vs co-channel

Partially overlapping adjacent channels are often worse than deliberate co-channel reuse because clients may not coordinate cleanly.

Regional differences

Allowed 2.4 GHz channels vary. Channels 12 and 13 are available in many regions, while channel 14 is restricted and legacy-specific.

40 MHz caution

40 MHz operation in 2.4 GHz consumes much of the band and is usually a poor fit for busy IoT or classroom deployments.
